Catania pics and 'crazy' explained
Well I realised I did not actually say why we called Catania crazy. It was mostly based on the driving and the roads. My gosh... within the first 2 mins in the taxi from the airport he had overtaken another car crossing dbl lines, on a curve whilst also exceeding the speed limit by at least 40kph. This was the start of quite a hair raising ride... then during the following day as we strolled around there was constant weaving and driving on the wrong side of the road by the locals. Add to this the constant honking of horns... we just kept saying... they are crazy, then laughing... it all really added to the atmosphere of it. No one was really agro or anything.. it was just how they are.
Ok... now to the photos
First up the hotel room ceiling.
Hotel from outside
The cathedral the taxi driver highlighted the night before
The wonderous first glimpse of Mt Etna
The men playing cards along with the audience
3 varieties of snails available at the market
How fresh is this garlic!... there was huge bunches available like this throughout the market
Finally, these ribbon fish. They were absolutely silver and looked like someone had polished them. Quite beautiful really.

Catania sounds so much more interesting to what I remember form last time, though we really only saw the dusty old bus depot. Gald to hear you are still enjoying it all. Not long now till the kids join you, at least you are in that country now. mum and dad arrived safely and are on their way south. All well at home otherwise and no more dramas you will be glad to hear. keep travelling safe and taking it all in.
Holy dooly, what a taxi ride? Thank God you can se the local side of things. Can take to that ceiling, what artistry? What a great pic of Mt etna smoke and all, no wonder Mark was in awe. Wonderful pics of your travels, and lovely memories when you look at again. Agree ribbon fish look great ,but, rather long for a 'fillet', would overflow the plate eh ? Take care and enjoy all. Much love
Have just googled earth ...boy...oh boy..How mountanous Sicily, but especially east coast and north coast....Taorminia will be in the heavens, could these "hills" be from eruption of etna? Great scenary!, Much Love enjoy
Hi Mark and Dominique,
Sounds like your having a great time. Your photos of snails and ribbon fish are amazing. I'm looking forward to your impresssions of Taormina, Messina and Tindari (if you get there). You've got to have a lemon granita, pink grapefruit gelati and sword fish when in Messina, with a Moretti bear. F&C
Italy's sounding pretty damn good though I'm worried you might be starving...any good food there???
Ha Ha Ha M-M !!
Your Sicily pages are bringing back great memories for me, including taste memories - pippies with fettucine and garlic oil and stuffed zucchini flowers OMG! Thanks Michelle and Anne Marie.
Mark, you need to stand on the top tier of the temple in Taormina and look over the temple and along the coast. You can see Mt Etna on your right and the shape of the coastline is old lava flow! It's not hard to imagine it all happening. Then take note of how many people live there too! It's awesome to be that close to the forces of nature. You should get a good look at Mt Versuvius when you're at the Amalfi Coast too, I hope.
I booked my trip to Red Centre today! WOO HOO !
xx
Stacey said Steve was very excited to that you enjoyed Croatia and was really thrilled with the pics. It was everything his parents have always told him and he was really glad to see things from other peoples' viewpoint. Thanks.
WOW guys, gotta love that crazy driving, we are just So over regulated and controlled in Aus!
and yes Georgina I'm remembering those meals we conjured up in Taormina,(My tofu soup is nearly ready & seems so boring by comparison to shopping with all of those marvellously fresh foods in the market)
ciao
