Yellowstone Day #3

I forgot to mention, the temperature on our day #2 got down to 0F or -16C. To be honest, the clothes we brought have worked a treat. Its certainly a new experience for us though. On our last day we had seen most of what we wanted in the park with the exception of the Lamar Valley. We heard we could get to it via a much longer route but just didnt fancy the long drive so decided on a slower day.
Though our hotel didn't have internet I found out one at the back did. So we decided to hang in their lobby to post some blogs. This is me doing my 'homework'. As suspected we have been challenged by the food here. Dinner in the restaurant (we could only get a 9pm booking) was like eating food that had been sitting in a bain marie for hours. Considering they start dinner service at 5pm Im guessing Im not far wrong. So after a couple of hours blogging, we decided to try the grill at the hotel we were in. Mark was very excited because they had burgers. That was until he saw them make them. The set up looked a bit like McDonalds, but they put the salad, cheese then meat on the burger roll, wrapped it up then microwaved it. Result = just warm meat, and Im sure you can imagine the salad after being in the micro. Nasty!
Our hotel is in what they call the upper geyser basin. It is a huge area with literally 100's of geysers. This one was boiling heavily. In all the park has something like 10,000. They have built an amazing boardwalk which is at least 3 km long that meanders through some of the nearby geysers.
Such a hot look! The sun was warm, the wind was not. It was still around -4C at 3pm. Sometimes it got to 0C for 5 mins around 4pm. Then it cooled off again.
The happy stroller being brave without a beanie.
This geyser was just constantly going crazy. Maybe you can see how far the water is shooting into the sky. Our evening was a bottle of wine with some rice crackers, and chatting to a lovely couple from Sth Lake Tahoe. We cancelled our dinner reservation and preferred to skip eating than have vaguely warm food of the type you only want to eat when it is just cooked. Like steak or stuffed chicken.

I'm trying to imagine being in that sort of cold! I think I would travel there in the warmer months, if they have them.
Great photos - THANKS.

Hi there, I have enjoyed catching up with your blog and I'm sure I've seen that same river in your pictures in western movies, a couple of ruggedly handsome cowboys on horseback peering under the rim of their hats discussing where to make camp for the night, sigh....
I didn't realise how cold it could be in that part of the states in this part of the year.. so there you go.. Louise

Your photos are fantastic...really brings your stories alive...though it is difficult for us to appreciate just how cold it is when the sky looks so blue, clear & warm!! I'm glad you have nice warm clothes to wear...it makes it much more enjoyable when you're not chilled to the core...& you can cope with bulky clothes. Shame about the lack of food quality...though good that you had planned ahead. Travel safe. Much love
